Variants Between Nvidia SHIELD Remote Controls

Here are the Differences Between Various Nvidia SHIELD Remote Controls

There are now several versions of the Nvidia SHIELD Remote Control. There are both minor changes and big ones. With the latest SHIELD remote, one of the nicest of all.

1. First Generation Nvidia SHIELD Remote

The first generation remote offered a rechargeable battery. This meant plugging it into your Nvidia SHIELD USB port when the batteries needed to be recharged. It was also less ergonomic, and some critics complained about its smallish size. It also did not have a Remote Finder alarm, and it was easy to misplace. There was also was no back light, so this remote is harder to use at night than current models which have back-lit buttons.

These batteries are not easily replaceable, but if you view this teardown guide. You can get an idea of what's involved to replace the rechargeable SHIELD remote battery. If you feel confident in your teardown skills, it's worthwhile. But if you rather not go to the trouble, you can buy the much nicer current generation SHIELD remote for less than $30. The Part Number for this battery is: Nvidia 3.8v 1.4wh (Model number 027-0033-000) rechargeable battery.

2. Second Generation Nvidia SHIELD Remote

The main difference between this and the first generation SHIELD remote is it used two CR2032 Lithium button type batteries instead of a rechargeable battery. The video shows how to change these and other SHIELD remote batteries.

3. Third Generation Nvidia SHIELD Remote

This is the latest and, in many users opinion's the nicest SHIELD remote yet. It now features 2 easily replaced AAA Alkaline batteries. And a much nicer ergonomic design. Best of all, it also has back-lit buttons. And if you grab the SHIELD remote app for your phone or tablet, you can even send an alert to your remote, which will beep in case it's ever misplaced.

There are several revisions to this latest generation remote. And the main differences are button labels, and later versions include a latch on the back to keep the battery cover on.

Some users, early on, complained the remote battery cover popped off too easily. But adding a piece of black electrical tape under the cover is an easy mod. And it provides just enough friction to keep the remote back on nice and snug. On remotes with out a latch, just slide the back cover down and lift it up and off to access the two AAA batteries.

With each revision, Nvidia has made their remote better than the last. But no matter which remote you may own for your Nvidia SHIELD, they are all pretty nice. But if your remote no longer works, the latest generation remote on eBay is less than $30. And you can keep your SHIELD all original with the best remote available for your Nvidia SHIELD yet.

Their newest remote works on all prior SHIELD models. So there are no compatibility issues with
older SHIELD models.
