By now almost every cord cutter may of heard of Plex or Kodi. But chances are pretty good that many of the media center apps on this list are not that well known.

Plex - Lets you watch content from free live TV channel along with playback of recorded TV content. It can also play your own home media files, stream on-demand video content, news channels podcasts and more. It has a very nice graphical user interface with thumbnails and meta data for all your files.
Emby - this is another personal media server with apps available for just about every streaming device.
Kodi - is a super popular app with the free TV crowd on Fire TV and Android. It's software is free and open-source with an awesome home theater/media center software and entertainment experience playing back digital media. Both personal media and that found online on the Internet.
OpenPHT - is another community-driven version of Plex Home Theater
Viewscreen - another light video streaming server app.
