Corona Virus COVID-19 Public Safety Announcement

Here are precautions to take to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from COVID-19

The Corona Virus that has taken the world by storm seems to be getting a lot of air time lately. While we should not panic and over react it makes sense to take some prudent precautions.

A lot of this is common sense, and should be practiced for other viral surges like the flu. Washing your hands often and avoiding large social get togethers during the winter months when these viruses are rampant is always a good idea.

From all the many articles we read online, here was a PSA summary from DSL Reports that summed it up very well. With some good practical advise for containing the spread of the COVID-19 Corona Virus.

Dear everyone,

I have been following news on this new virus closely since January and despite zero medical qualifications would like to give you my short take, summarized from many expert opinions I have read.

The SARS-Cov2 virus that causes COVID19 hits older people (60 and up) particularly hard. Younger people can feel like they have a walking cold - or nothing at all.

It spreads easily with time spent in confined crowded places with someone who has it, yet it rarely spreads over casual short duration proximity such as on the street or a brief interaction.

Fit healthy people may feel invincible but if they carry the virus to the older generation - particularly those in aged care facilities - then lives can be lost.

Japan is advising citizens in Hokkaido to minimize participation in crowded indoor activities, and self-isolate for 14 days at any sign of fever. This advice is applicable globally. (It is also applicable to any bad flu season).

The spread of the virus in a community is accelerated by so-called cluster events: banquets, long business meetings, parties, indoor functions. Eliminating these slows the spread and and lowers the healthcare load. Active social healthy people may be the ones who have the most opportunity to slow or reverse the spread.

Recent events show that the virus may be in your community before it hits the news. Take precautions before the government asks for them, the government is probably slow to react.

There are many resources online including from your local government available under any virus search made on social media. An accessible resource is the daily update vlog from UK retiree, Dr John Campbell, on youtube He also has individual videos recapping such things as how to home isolate, how to wash hands, and so on. Highly recommended.

Since I wrote this PSA, things have become more urgent in Italy (national lock-down), Europe in general and in America. South Korea has demonstrated, if anyone cares to look closely, how to bend the curve of new cases downward. Unfortunately the response in America has lagged events and the Whitehouse seems intent on making every single crisis mistake: from "just the flu", to bailing out airlines, shale oil refiners and the cruise business (which pays no taxes and employs few Americans). Recent clusters in America such as the Boston Biogen meeting (175 people in one building) underline the role friendly gatherings with lots of hand-shaking have in fast-spreading the virus. The number of exposed or infected politicians globally demonstrates that social distancing advice is not being heeded. You can help by advising your own friends and associates how to avoid catching and, more importantly, passing it on.
