OTA Encryption Is Coming
With the rollout of ATSC 3.0, there is speculation that broadcasters will encrypt the signals that many now enjoy for free from an over-the-air antenna.
While you can never underestimate corporate greed, it may not be as bad as you think for several reasons.
Current FCC Rules, specify that the major networks must broadcast their local TV signal over the air for free. But your ATSC 3.0 tuner if you own may require an update to decrypt the encrypted channels.
Most large channels like CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS will remain free to watch with no subscription. But some channels may choose to broadcast their premium channels over the air and these will still require a subscription to buy.
Why Will They encrypt OTA TV?
One main reason that we will see encryption on all OTA channels is to stop retransmission without permission. This has happened several times in the past. Some of you may remember apps or steaming services like Locast and Aereo that rebroadcast Free TV signals from an antenna over the Internet.
They both were sued and lost in court. This is why broadcasters will no doubt want to encrypt their 3.0 ATSC signal to prevent this from happening. Since tuners can decode this signal it won't affect those who watch free.
So while the new ATSC 3.0 OTA technology is still in the process of rolling out. There is no reason to be fearful that you will lose your free TV from an antenna anytime soon. So you can continue enjoying 100% Free broadcast TV over the air for some time to come.
