Android TV Devices Will Have Limited YouTube 8K Support

With the latest YouTube Android TV app update version 2.12.08, on Android 10+ it will now offer “limited” 8K support.

Not many televisions yet support 8K, but if you are an early adopter of this latest television technology. Finding 8K content to watch is very limited.  The good news is YouTube recently updated its app for Android TV so that it will now fully support 8K playback.

Some cell phones are already capable of recording in 8K, and there is already some content available to watch now. This makes YouTube one of the few places online where 8K content is available to watch.

8K content is not exactly new to YouTube, since they have supported it already since 2015. But their app has been updated to fully support playback of this eye-popping resolution.

8K Resolution and Data Usage Comparison Between 8K, 4K and HD 1080p

8K UHD resolution which is the next step up after 4K has a display resolution that's approximately 8000 pixels. This is double the resolution of 4K UHD which is approximately 4000 pixels.

The clarity of the screen is ultra enhanced with double the detail. But this higher resolution comes with a big drawback which is data usage.

Comcast recently implementing data caps nationwide, and other broadband providers following in their footsteps. Data usage is more concerning than it may once have been.

Here is a handy chart that shows how much data a typically YouTube video uses in various resolutions in a minute:

480p – 9 MBs/Minute

720p – 11 MBs/Minute

1080p – 18 MBs/Minute

4K (2160p) – 174 MBs/Minute

8K (4320p) – 589 MBs/Minute

To determine how much data a 30 minute TV show or 120-minute movies uses, multiply the MB number times the video length minutes. If a movie is 2 hours and ten minutes long multiply each hour by 60 and add the ten. This would be a total of 130 minutes.

Another example, a 30 minute TV show watched in 8K will use (30 X 589 MB a minute which is a total of 17,670 MB or 17.6 GB)

If your data cap is 1.1 TB you could watch 60 30 minute shows a month without exceeding your data cap. But since watching YouTube movies and TV shows is probably not the only thing you will do online, real world usage will be even less.

So until fast, cheap, and unlimited broadband is widely available. We probably won't see widespread use of 8K video content or the sale of corresponding TVs and streaming devices capable of playback for some time.

But as time marches on, 8K will soon become the new standard that will replace 4K and 1080p televisions and streaming devices. After the price drops to the point where mere mortals like us can afford to buy it.
