Amazon's Fire TV Now Has More Users Than Roku
Roku Get's A Lot of Media Attention and Is a Great Box for First Time Cord-cutters
Amazon just released the number of users who use their Fire TV set-top box streamers and they now have surpassed Roku in the number of users.
Even though Roku has increased their "Active Accounts by 2 Million to a total of 29 which to be fair was a number they released a little earlier this year.
Amazon now has 34 million "Active Users" which according to Cheddar they recently presented at an industry conference.
Taking up 3, and 4th place respectively were both the Chromecast, and Apple TV.
More Users Does Not Necessarily Mean More Money For Amazon
Roku has been raking in some nice profits by selling advertising on its platform. They have also done a great job of stamping out pirate channels on their media streamer.
Amazon, on the other hand, is widely used by many for using Kodi. This is an app which itself does not let you access any pirated content. But it can easily be configured to view many television shows and movies for free with the used of 3rd party add-ons.
Besides Kodi, a long list of Android TV apps can also easily be sideloaded to a Fire TV. And these can be used to watch the same live and on-demand content for free.
Many Fire TV users are using their media streamer with the explicit purpose of watching this content. And their affordable 4K Fire TV Streaming Stick model works very well for this purpose. This accounts for the popularity of their media streamer.
While Amazon may be winning the battle for "Active Accounts." Roku is winning the war where it count, for advertising dollars. And since cable and satellite are both dying a slow death. Eventually, most advertising will be done on streaming TV devices.
